Surf’s up….don’t get left behind!

27-10-2008 - It’s hard not to feel left behind in today’s world of technology if you have little or no knowledge of the internet. It’s never too late to learn and Digitall, a mentoring project which aims to help over 45s get internet savvy is the answer…but only until the end of November.

Call for “volunteer friends” in Scotland

27-10-2008 - Volunteers are wanted to act as mentors to refugees as they settle into the community and find their feet in Scotland. The mentors are being recruited by Time Together, a programme which helps forge friendships between refugees and local people.
Time Together forms one strand of the new Refugee Integration and Employment Service (RIES) which offers support to all newly arrived refugees to the UK as well as those granted humanitarian protection. RIES is funded by the UK Border Agency and delivered and managed in Scotland by the Scottish Refugee Council.
Among its partner organisations are the Volunteer Centre Glasgow and TimeBank, which are jointly responsible for the Time Together programme. Once the immediate needs of refugees have been catered for, mentors are introduced to help them settle into the community.

Quotations

Jeremy Milnes Jeremy Milnes

Fame Academy mentor and TV personality Jeremy Milnes “Mentoring and befriending is an incredibly powerful vehicle for empowering people. Volunteering as a mentor or befriender is a valuable and worthwhile use of time, which is hugely appreciated by those receiving advice and support.

People are often put off the idea of being a mentor or befriender by thinking ‘what can I offer?’ when, actually, they have years of experience and knowledge. I know from personal experience how the simple act of offering tips, advice and companionship to people, who may have had a tough time but want to get on in life, can be utterly life changing.”
